Augusta Alumni Chapter

     The Augusta Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was chartered on May 2, 1952, uniting Kappa Alpha Psi members in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) and extending membership to local men with similar interests.

     In 1954, the chapter purchased its first fraternity house on Blakely Street, becoming the first black Greek Letter organization in the South to own a fraternity house. Later, in 1956, they acquired a larger house on 15th Street, which served as their meeting and social gathering space for over 40 years.

     The chapter has donated over $50,000 to the United Negro College Fund, $10,000 to the NAACP, $15,000 to Guide-Right programs, and over $20,000 to other local charities. They also award annual scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the CSRA.

      The chapter organized significant events such as the Kappa Kowboy and Kowgirl Contest and the Kappa Dawn Dance in 1958, which was the first formal dance conducted by a black fraternity in the Augusta area. They have also sponsored three Provincial Council Meetings, six Polemarch Workshops, and ten C. Roger Wilson Workshops.

     Several local landmarks have been named in honor of chapter brothers, including the Lucy C. Laney High School Field House and Football Field (David M. Dupree) and T.W. Josey High School Gym (James Roundtree). The chapter has received awards such as the 2010 Volunteer Group of the Year for the Central Savannah River Area.
